Endolymphatic Hydrops
Endolymphatic hydrops is a disorder of the inner ear caused by an excessive build-up of fluid (endolymph). This increased fluid pressure can affect both the hearing and balance organs, leading to episodes of dizziness, vertigo and changes in hearing.
Endolymphatic hydrops may occur on its own or alongside other inner ear conditions, including Ménière’s disease. Symptoms can vary from person to person and may fluctuate over time.
Common Symptoms
People with endolymphatic hydrops may experience:
- Episodes of dizziness or vertigo
- Balance problems or unsteadiness
- Fluctuating hearing loss
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- A feeling of fullness or pressure in the affected ear
- Motion sensitivity
- Nausea during episodes
Symptoms may occur suddenly and can last from minutes to several hours.
What Causes Endolymphatic Hydrops?
The exact cause is not always known. Symptoms occur when excess fluid within the inner ear disrupts the normal function of the balance and hearing organs.
Potential contributing factors include:
- Inner ear disorders such as Ménière’s disease
- Previous inner ear infections
- Head trauma
- Autoimmune conditions
- In some cases, no clear cause is identified
Your ENT specialist may recommend further investigations to determine the underlying cause and discuss medical management options.
How Can Physiotherapy Help?
Although physiotherapy cannot reduce the fluid build-up within the inner ear, vestibular rehabilitation can help your brain adapt to changes in balance function and improve your overall stability.
Your treatment program may include:
- Vestibular rehabilitation exercises
- Balance retraining
- Gaze stabilisation exercises
- Walking and mobility training
- Falls prevention strategies
- Education to improve confidence and activity levels
- Individualised home exercise programs
Early intervention can also help prevent secondary problems such as reduced mobility, fear of movement, muscle tension and loss of confidence.
Why Choose Advanced Neuro Rehab?
At Advanced Neuro Rehab, our neurological physiotherapists have extensive experience assessing and treating people living with vestibular disorders. We work alongside your ENT specialist and healthcare team to develop an individualised rehabilitation program that helps improve balance, reduce dizziness-related disability and restore confidence in everyday activities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is endolymphatic hydrops the same as Ménière’s disease?
Not exactly. Endolymphatic hydrops describes the build-up of excess fluid within the inner ear. Ménière’s disease is a specific condition that is associated with endolymphatic hydrops, but hydrops can also occur in other circumstances.
Can physiotherapy cure endolymphatic hydrops?
Physiotherapy does not treat the underlying fluid imbalance. However, vestibular rehabilitation can significantly improve balance, reduce dizziness-related disability and help your brain compensate for changes in vestibular function.
When should I see a physiotherapist?
If dizziness, vertigo or balance problems are affecting your daily activities, a vestibular assessment can help determine whether rehabilitation may improve your symptoms alongside your medical management.
