Functional Neurological Disorders (FND)
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a common condition of abnormal nervous system function which can lead to motor symptoms such as tremor or paralysis, sensory or visual changes, speech changes, cognitive changes or seizures.
Unfortunately Functional Neurological Disorder still remains misunderstood in the medical community as a condition that has fallen through the cracks between neurology and psychiatry. It is important to know that Functional Neurological Disorder is diagnosed based on specific clinical tests, usually from a neurologist. People with Functional Neurological Disorder can have coexisting neurological or psychiatric conditions, previous trauma, physical or psychological stress. However Functional Neurological Disorder can occur at any age, in people without any coexisting conditions .
Recent research indicates that people with Functional Neurological Disorder have abnormal brain circuits that result in these specific impairments. In the case of functional movement disorders, there may be changes in connectivity between brain regions involved in movement planning, sensory prediction and attention.
