Exercise Rehabilitation: Why the Right Exercises Matter More Than You Think

Practitioner guiding client through resistance exercise

When you visit a physiotherapist, you might expect to receive a few exercises to practise at home. But effective rehabilitation involves much more than choosing exercises and deciding how many repetitions to complete.

At Advanced Neuro Rehab (ANR), we believe successful rehabilitation starts with understanding your condition, your movement difficulties and what you want to achieve.

Your Exercises Should Have a Purpose

Everyone’s rehabilitation needs are different.

You might want to improve your balance, walk more confidently, reduce dizziness, return to sport or manage everyday activities more independently.

Your physiotherapist assesses what may be limiting your movement and develops an individualised programme to address these difficulties.

For example, improving your walking might involve strengthening exercises, balance training, managing muscle stiffness or practising movement in different environments.

The goal isn’t simply to get better at exercises. It’s to improve your ability to do the things that matter to you.

Why Choose a Physiotherapist for Exercise Rehabilitation?

Exercise physiologists play an important role in improving fitness, strength and physical activity. However, when movement difficulties involve complex medical conditions, pain or neurological symptoms, physiotherapists bring additional clinical assessment and treatment skills.

Physiotherapists are trained to assess and manage a broad range of conditions that may affect your ability to exercise safely and effectively, including:

  • Pain and arthritis: Managing joint pain, stiffness and movement limitations while adapting exercises to your needs.

  • Musculoskeletal injuries: Assessing and treating muscle, tendon, ligament and joint problems that may affect rehabilitation.

  • Spasticity and neurological conditions: Managing abnormal muscle stiffness, weakness, coordination difficulties and altered movement with conditions such as stroke or multiple sclerosis.

  • Vestibular conditions and dizziness: Assessing and treating balance disorders, vertigo and dizziness that may interfere with movement and exercise.

  • Complex movement difficulties: Understanding how several conditions may interact and influence your rehabilitation.

This means your physiotherapist can combine exercise with other appropriate treatments and adjust your programme when symptoms, pain or movement difficulties change.

For people with complex rehabilitation needs, exercise is often just one part of the treatment plan.

Finding the Right Level of Challenge

Exercises need to be challenging enough to encourage improvement without becoming unsafe or overwhelming.

Your physiotherapist can change the difficulty by adjusting speed, resistance, balance demands, movement patterns or the environment.

Importantly, more exercises don’t always mean better results. Sometimes focusing on a few carefully selected activities provides more meaningful practice.

What If Exercise Causes Symptoms?

During neurological or vestibular rehabilitation, some exercises may temporarily increase symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue or discomfort.

This doesn’t always mean the exercise is harmful, but pushing through symptoms isn’t necessarily appropriate either.

Your physiotherapist helps determine what symptoms are acceptable, when exercises should be modified and how to progress safely.

Building Confidence Beyond the Clinic

Successful rehabilitation isn’t just about what happens during your appointment.

It’s about developing the confidence, skills and knowledge to remain active in everyday life.
