A knock to the head does not need to involve a diagnosed concussion to leave you with lingering symptoms. Dizziness, headache, poor balance, neck pain or difficulty concentrating can all follow a head injury of any severity. Our team provides rehabilitation across the full spectrum of head injury, from mild knocks through to more significant traumatic brain injury.
What head injury rehabilitation involves
Every head injury is different, so we start with a thorough assessment to understand which systems have been affected. This can include:
- Neck movement, strength and pain
- Vestibular (inner ear) and eye movement function
- Balance, coordination and gait
- Exercise and activity tolerance
- Cognitive-linked symptoms such as concentration and memory difficulties
From there, we build an individualised rehabilitation program. Depending on what we find, this might involve vestibular rehabilitation, hands-on neck treatment, balance and gait retraining, or a progressive exercise program to rebuild strength, fitness and exercise tolerance.
Working alongside your medical team
For more significant head injuries, rehabilitation is rarely done in isolation. We work closely with GPs, neurologists, neuropsychologists and other allied health professionals to make sure your physiotherapy is aligned with the rest of your medical care and recovery goals.
Supporting your family and support network
Head injury affects more than just the person injured. We provide education for family members and carers so everyone understands the recovery process, what to expect, and how best to support the person recovering.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between concussion and a head injury?
Concussion is a type of mild head injury. Head injury is a broader term that also covers more significant traumatic brain injuries, which may involve longer or more intensive rehabilitation.
Do you treat moderate to severe brain injury as well as concussion?
Yes. Our neurological physiotherapists work across the full spectrum, from mild concussion through to more significant traumatic brain injury, tailoring rehabilitation to the individual.
Can family members be involved in rehabilitation sessions?
Yes, and we encourage it. We provide education for family members and carers so they understand the recovery process and how best to support their loved one.
Do you offer home visits for head injury rehabilitation?
Yes. We offer home visits as well as telehealth appointments for patients who need extra support attending a clinic in person.
