At Advanced Neuro Rehab, we are always looking for ways to learn and improve so we can provide the best possible care for our clients.
Recently, we were lucky to have Laura from OPC Health visit our team to provide education on the different types of Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs).
An AFO is a brace worn on the lower leg and foot to help support the ankle, improve stability, and make walking safer and more efficient. AFOs can help people with neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, or spinal cord injuries by improving foot clearance, reducing the risk of trips and falls, and promoting a more natural walking pattern.
There are many different types of AFOs, and each is designed to meet different needs. Some are flexible and allow more natural ankle movement while providing support, while others are more rigid to improve stability and control. There are also dynamic carbon fibre AFOs that can store and release energy to assist with walking, as well as custom-made and off-the-shelf options. Choosing the right AFO depends on a person’s strength, movement, balance, and goals.
Learning about the different types of AFOs and when they are most appropriate helps our physiotherapists tailor treatment to each person’s individual needs.
A big thank you to Laura and OPC Health for sharing their knowledge with our team. We love every opportunity to keep upskilling at ANR so we can continue delivering the highest quality care to our clients!
