FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER (FND)

Weekly Staff Professional Development Topic

Last week in our staff Professional Development Session, we spoke about FND!

What is FND?
FND is a common neurological condition where there is abnormal function of the nervous system. The nervous system is made up of two aspects; the “hardware”, which encompasses the nerves and brain; and the “software”, which is the way the brain and nerves communicate with each other.

In FND it is the software that is impacted which can lead to motor symptoms such as weakness or paralysis, issues with walking, balance concerns, tremors, speech issues, tics, changes in cognition, visual issues, fatigue and seizures.

FND can occur on its own or it can occur in conjunction with another condition.

What is the role of Physiotherapy?
Using individually tailored programs, Physiotherapy helps people with FND to regain function and improve their motor symptoms, such as weakness, walking and balance.

Physiotherapy assists people with FND through education and helping them to better understand the condition (knowledge is power). They provide exercises to be performed under supervision while in the session and for home, as well as hands on treatment as required.

People with FND can benefit from different forms of Physiotherapy including individual sessions, group classes or hydrotherapy. Physiotherapy is often completed in conjunction with other allied health professionals depending on each person with FND’s needs.
