Getting Moving with Myotonic Dystrophy

24th March, 2018

Myotonic Dystrophy (DM) is the most common type of Muscular Dystrophy affecting adults in a wide variety of ways.  Fatigue, muscle weakness, pain and difficulty with controlling movements can all be characteristic symptoms that those with DM may experience; so where do us Neurophysiotherapists fit into the picture?

Well, On the 20th February, Eileen and myself were fortunate enough to head to the Muscular Dystrophy Association to chat about Myotonic Dystrophy and the fundamental role of Neurophysiotherapy. The presentation outlined Myotonic Dystrophy, our role as Neurophysiotherapists, the importance of exercise and movement as well as accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Variations of exercises and stretches were led by Eileen and myself with a focus on adapting exercises to suit individuals within the group. This was a great opportunity for clients to participate and get a feel of some practical things they could take away and practice at home.

Knowing what supports are available for you; if you are affected by a chronic health condition, is absolutely essential in the management of your condition- this is how we wrapped up our discussion. We discussed how to identify if you are eligible for NDIS, examples of supports that could be included in your care plan and how to prepare for planning meetings.

This was a great opportunity to provide education and advice to those affected by Muscular Dystrophy; discuss the different components of Neurophysiotherapy management and most importantly highlight the importance of keeping moving!

Both Eileen and myself were extremely glad that you found the presentation “…very information, interactive and overall beneficial”.

For any information or a  Neurophysiotherapy assessment for the management of Muscular Dystrophy, we would be happy to help!  Just contact us on 8363 0458.
